WE ARE ALL "CONSUMERS" !

From the time we are born, and thus "consumers" of medical services, to the time we die, and thus "consumers" of funeral services, we spend almost our entire lives being Consumers of various goods and services.  Our society has come a long way since the prevailing philosophy of caveat emptor ruled the law.  Though the buyer should still "beware" - in recent years "consumer's rights" have developed a strong and valuable position in our society.  This has led to safer products, better quality products and services, and a more equal position of buyer and sellers, who are often large, well funded corporations.  And these "consumer rights," more often than not,  have come about as the result of litigation on behalf of consumers by lawyers who had agreed to represent Consumers on a Contingency Fee agreement.  Is there any wonder why large corporations and insurance companies would like to do away with the consumer attroneys, the trial lawyers, and the Contingent Fee agreements?

Here are a number of sites that provide valuable information for Consumers. If any of you know of any other sites that should be included on this page,   please use the link at the bottom of the page to send me an e-mail and let me know about it.

Please note that every once in a while these sites may not be available because they are out for service or some other reason. This happens frequently with government web-sites. I check these sites frequently but if it is not connecting when you check it - try back later.

bulletnew02.gif (117 bytes)CONSUMERWORLD - An absolute "must" site for consumer assistance on every topic you can imagine.

bulletCALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS  --- This, and the U.S. Consumer Information Center, below, are undoubtably the best sites available for consumer related issues.  You can spend a week in each of them.   On this one, go to "Consumer Information" first and just start "surfing."  You will find answers to "Frequently Asked Questions,"  links to resource and referal guides, and (my favorite) - Top 10 Scams!  Everytime I visit this site I find something new.

bulletU.S. CONSUMER INFORMATION CENTER    ---  Everything you ever wanted to know about consumer issues and probably be found in this, or the cite, above, from the Calif. Dept. of Consumer Affairs.   Her you can order pamphlets and publications - most for less than $!.00 - on every topic you can imagine.  Who writes all of these things anyway???  There are pamphlets on:  Cars, Children, Employment; Federal Programs, Food & Nutrition; Health; Housing; Money; Small Business, and (of course) "Miscellaneous."

bulletL.A. COUNTY DEPT. OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS  ---  This site, though it is not as extensive as the State of California site, contains many good sources of infromation related to issues particularly centered in the Los Angeles area.

bulletCEMETARY AND FUNERAL ISSUES   ---  The time at which the consumer is the most vulnerable is when they have just lost a  loved one and now must plan the funeral and burial.  It is at this time when unconsciousable thing frequently happen to consumers.  It is well known that funeral homes routinely mark up everything from caskets to "memory books" by 300% to as much as 600%.  This site is the main site for the Department of Consumer Affairs - at the bottom of the site there is a "search" block.  Type in that block the words - cemetary funeral - and you will get more information about cemetary and funeral issues than you ever wanted to know!
